Religious themes were encouraged by art’s primary patron, the Church. Some see the development of pillarization in the Netherlands as a failure of Kuyper to properly limit the state to its own sphere among other societal spheres, and to distinguish societal spheres from worldview communities. Now since it’s too tedious and time-consuming to do this on every issue, we invented democratic processes to elect representative governments to sort through this stuff for us.
As I explained to my construction industry friends, the mission of the Work Research Foundation is not simply to cultivate a Christian view of work but to do so within the context of sphere sovereignty as part of a framework for thinking about the renewal of the economic sphere and public life.
But let me show you what I mean. Instrumental in winning this drawn-out battle were two central Kuyperian concepts. It’s not that I wasn’t prepared for the question; in a sense, I’ve been preparing my whole life for this sort of question. The rise of secularization among the Dutch, as well soverwignty the national and economic consequences of the first two world wars, led to the Dutch people regretfully turning toward the welfare state.
Politics and Culture of the Welfare State: For instance, the different God-given norms for family life and economic life should be recognized, such that a family does not properly function like a business. This glow radiating from the city and landing on the countryside is common grace. It led to emancipation and civil rights for black slaves in the United States, women’s suffrage, the virtual elimination of child labour, and humane working conditions for the rest of us.
While there are many discussions that have and will take place between promoters of sphere sovereignty and subsidiarity, on the essential point, we are co-workers: Remember me on this computer. Construction is a tough pool to stay afloat in, given the up-and-down nature of the industry. As a strong Calvinist, Kuyper could not attribute to any human institution an absolute authority—not even an absolute temporal authority.
Whether it be children, the elderly, or another disadvantaged group, some members of society will not receive the care they should from their families or social communities. Market uncertainty is not the only variable.
Finally, the church influences society by bringing together rich and poor through the holy ordinance of communion, establishing an equality of brotherhood. Touchstone,— Svereignty prohibits the church from issuing commands to other spheres because authority that Christ delegated to the church is limited. Interestingly, Kuyper cites the example of the United States as a model for churches. Guillaume Groen van Prinsterer, an important 19th-century politician who steadfastly opposed the liberal Johan Rudolph Thorbecke, author of the Dutch constitution, wrote in support of an early secessionist movement from the Dutch Reformed Church, some of whose adherents left in the mids for Michigan; there they later formed the Christian Reformed Church, in which Betsy DeVos would grow up.
Now, however, the folks at the Canadian Reformed Seminary in Hamilton, Ontario, have produced a much more readable translation, with helpful explanatory notes, which deserves careful attention from those of us in the Kuyperian camp.
