Even though the story ends well, a book that had huge potential became nothing more than an entertaining but mediocre read. I loved the characters and the storyline. I would have given this a 5 star review except for the “major bt that leads to the zenith of the story. The characterization is rich and authentic Jun 10, Kellyn Roth rated it liked it Shelves: I’m giving the book a 3 out of 5 because it did manage to make me want to move to the redwoods and eat potatoes and hotcakes every day, whatever a hotcake is. If a book doesn’t focus on it I’m usually fine because as girls reading these books it doesn’t bother us to read about curves or whatever, but in my opinion this particular book was way too focused on it and things that are private for a reason,which really, really disappointed me.

He needs a wife or he will lose his land. Gist’s reasons for Anna’s behavior, she still came across as an incredibly self-centered girl who put her own worries above the welfare of feeanne else. At times it felt thick enough to slice. I appreciated Joe’s hardworking nature and ambition that made it possible for him to bridf a successful logging outfit from the ground up, and I can understand how it would be a difficult choice to leave all that.
It was way to slow to get to the heart of the story. Picking up his ax, he returned to his work. Through a series of misunderstandings, the chick that is brought to him does not want to marry him.

I especially liked how independent Anna was! Then he hits the women up for more half way through passage and forgets to tell some of the women that they are actually supposed to get married to a pre-selected man when they get to their destination. Refusing to marry, she stays in his home as a cook but soon falls for her boss. This was actually a pretty amusing novel, but there was a ton of physical attraction between the leads. On Before I start reading a deeane book by Deeanne Gist, I make sure my schedule is clear – no deadlines looming, no appointments to get to – because I know once I start, I’m not going to want to stop. The kind that made breathing difficult and standing near impossible.
All in all, I think I would have enjoyed these characters quite a bit if I had just been able to get a better gride on their personalities.
